HSE Licensed Asbestos Removal

Asbestos Work Catagories

Non-licensed work with asbestos

Non-licensed work does not require a notification to the HSE. Non-licensed products generally have asbestos fibres firmly contained within a matrix of the material therefore exposure of workers to asbestos will not exceed the legal control limit of 0.1 asbestos fibres per cubic centimetre of air (0.1 f/cm3).

Notifiable Non-Licensed Work (NNLW)

NNLW work needs to be notified to the relevant enforcing authority via an online portal, the NNLW can be submitted anytime before the start of work, whether the work is NNLW will depend on the type of work, asbestos type and material condition, the most common work that falls under NNLW will be large scale textured coating removal, short duration work on insulation material or work on any substantially damaged or degraded non licenced material.

Licensed Work

Licensable work needs to be notified to the HSE or relevant local authority via an online portal 14 days prior to work taking place. Licensed work will normally be when working with insulation material or where the work will exceed the control limit of 0.1 asbestos fibres per cubic centimetre of air (0.1 f/cm3).

The licensing system is a strict process put in place to ensure that those employers carrying out higher risk work on asbestos can demonstrate that they are competent to carry out the work, have the necessary knowledge, experience and expertise to protect the health and safety of their employees and themselves.
